I first heard Mark Berube play this Neil Young piece at Rime in early '07 and ended up in tears...and then had to learn it 'cause as Clem Snide sings "your favourite music, well it just makes you sad..." or Tim Tweedale, more poetically on the healing power of music: " the painfulness of good music is an important aspect of that healing. Music says to you, “Listen, I am going to make you hurt for a moment here; with your permission, I am going to open up your heart and go right to that place where you are hurting. Then I am going to just sing in there for a little while. “"
and so. there is a resignation and a hopefulness and an acceptance of what has come to pass in this song that I think is beautiful. Here is a father/daughter rendition for Yis, sung with a fresh coating of heartache in late October.
